How to Become a More Patient Person
Just the other day, we paused to consider whether or not impatience was getting the best of us. The problem with impatience is that it breeds discontentment in our lives. How do we cultivate patience in a way that pleases God?
Psalms 37:7 (NIV) encourages us to be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. Ultimately, it is God's desire for us to slow down, gather ourselves, and patiently wait on Him. How do we make that practical and apply it to our everyday lives? Becoming a more patient person requires us to do a few things:
1. Sense What God is Doing
If we are going to become more patient people, then we must sense what God is doing. God cannot and will not be rushed. Take a moment and let that settle into your spirit. We simply cannot force God to adhere to our timelines. The choice is ours, we can continually wrestle with God and try to get Him to move at the pace we like (losing the battle every time) or we can rest in Him and move at His pace.
When we sense what God is doing, we will be able to process what He is teaching and concentrate our prayers and effort. When we sense it we can cooperate. Patient people can sense what God is doing and rest assured.
2. Set Your Mind Up for Success
The second thing we can do to become more patient people is set our minds up for success. Chances are your life probably does not look the exact way you want it to right now. You may know that God has amazing things in store for you, but nothing around you seems to suggest that. The key is to set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2 KJV). When you keep your mind focused on what God is saying and doing concerning your life then nothing will change your mind. That is setting your mind up for success! When we begin to practice this we can rest and patiently wait on the Father.
3. Shut Out the Distractions
When becoming a more patient person, you have to shut out the distractions. People will be people, situations happen, and circumstances remain, but we have to ignore all of that. One way to know, for sure, that you are becoming more patient is when you are no longer as easily affected by all of the distractions. You will be able to calmly see right past those distractions and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.
You can do it...you have what it takes to become a more patient person if that is what you desire. I bet you will even find life to be more enjoyable as you bear the fruit of patience. Are you ready? Let Him heal your soul!
