How Much Longer?

Have you ever rode in the car with a young child for an extended period of time?  If so, I am certain you were asked that infamous question at least five million times…“How much longer?” “Are we there yet?”  Children can be really impatient, but are they the only ones guilty?  I think we can agree that they are not.  Why is waiting so hard?  At some point or another, for some reason or another, we have all had to wait.  Waiting in the line at the grocery store, waiting at the drive-thru, waiting for test results, waiting to get the job, waiting to be chosen, waiting to be noticed…it seems like we wait our lives away.  Since we do so much waiting, you would think that we would be good at it by now, right?  I think not.  What is it about waiting that drives us absolutely crazy?!

Waiting is defined as remaining inactive or in a state of repose, as until something expected happens; to remain neglected for a time; to postpone or delay something.  Isn’t that exactly how waiting makes us feel?  We feel as though life is whizzing past us at the speed of light, and here we are inactive, neglected, postponed, and delayed.

We wonder whether we will ever win as the wait closes in on us.

Have you ever driven down the highway and noticed one of those emergency room wait time billboards?  They have an electrical device which announces to people, on the way to the emergency room, approximately how long they will have to wait once they arrive.  You are probably like me and feel like your wait is an emergency situation at times.

Where in the world are our wait time billboards to announce how much longer this wait will be?!

As we walk this daily journey with God, how often do you and I resemble young children on a long car ride, repeatedly asking God, “how much longer” and “are we there yet”?

While there are no physical billboards to assist us with these spiritual matters, I do believe that God has given us scriptures to assist us in the wait.  We may be thinking, I’m having an emergency, how long is this wait going to be?  God answers us with Psalms 27:13-14 (NIV) I remain confident of this:  I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.  Yes, we do a lot of waiting, but are we waiting correctly?  We spend so much time waiting on everything and everyone BUT God.

This scripture reassures us that when we wait on God we will see the goodness of the Lord!   You will see His goodness in your life and situation!  I will see His goodness in my life and situation as well!  Take a moment and look with your spiritual eyes, can you ‘see’ it?  There is a spiritual wait time billboard.  It reads, Wait time:  in due season (at the proper time) Galatians 6:9.  No, it is not in minutes, days, or hours as we would like for it to be, but due season is an appointed time!  I do not know how much longer it will be for you or I.  Only God knows that.  We just have to wait for Him and as we wait, He is preparing to pour His goodness out on our lives!  Let Him heal your soul!

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, We come just to thank you today!  Forgive us for the times when we were impatient and refused to wait on you.  Help us and encourage us in our wait.  Remind us that our appointed time is on the way.  Each day, each moment, each hour we are closer to it.  Make us ready to receive your goodness in our lives.  In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
